Are we better than everyone else?

According to Hertsgaard, America's sense of superiority may well be the very thing that's feeding the flames of anti-Americanism around the world. America has seemed to always have this outlook, and it does take its toll. For example, 9/11. Who really knows what happened? Most Americans don't have the slightest idea what is going on in the world. Is it because we're stubborn or just too lazy to pick up a newspaper and read. Our country is not innocent, and neither are our leaders. Yet, we still ask ourselves, why does this country or that country not like us? Is it because we invaded your country for bogus reasons? Maybe. If we hadn't of gone into Iraq, what would have happened? Would we be in the situation we are in now? Are Americans going to start waking up or are we just going to be in an ignorant funk until we have realized that every country is against us?

Who is to say that America's sense of superiority is wrong in the first place? Is it wrong for the American people to take pride in their country that they love so much? Also, who ever wrote this article does not provide anything to back their point up of America thinking that they are superior to everyone else. The blogger goes from talking about how America thinks that they are superior to everyone else and then uses 9/11 as an example. Then the blogger goes on to dig him/herself in a deeper hole. Who really knows what happened on 9/11?! Are you serious?! Everyone knows what happened on 9/11! We have tapes off of Al Gezera of Osama bin Laden admitting to the attacks and saying how he didn't know the towers would go down that fast. But that is besides the point. What do the events of 9/11 have to do with America's sense of superiority? Also, what gives this blogger the right to say that most Americans don't know what is going on in the world? That is one of the most ignorant statements that I have ever heard. Turn on the news, there are plenty of well-read Americans who know plenty about the world around us. Then the blogger goes on to say that other countries don't like us. Of course there is going to be countries that don't like us. It is hard to find two individuals that share the same political views- do you really think that America is going to be able to please every country? I don't think so. And just because this blogger thinks that we invade other countries for "bogus" reasons, that doesn't make it a fact. Finally, to say every country against us proves that the blogger doesn't know what he/she is talking about. If EVERY country didn't like us then the anti-american leaders of both France and Germany would not have just been replaced by leaders that are pro-american. I can't believe this person even thinks what they have to say has any truth to it.

To be honest its like we're always there in that country "trying" to help them then a war brakes out and we have to fight in it because "we're so powerful". "Trying" to help fix government does not mean running it even farther into the ground. WE are always pushing our government style on to other countries yet you do not see them pushing their's on to us. Plus every country that we've "tried" helping by pushing our government ways on to always seem to find something better or never use our ways and it works for them, only our government somehow works for us. Even that is a long shot with our government working for us, but somehow it does and we cannot complain too much.

I agree with you about most Americans being ignorant towards whats happening in the world around us, but instead of asking when are we going to wake and realize what's happening, we need to spread the word and enlighten people who aren't aware of what's going on. As the youth of America, we need to change things, and not rely on a authority figure to tell us what to do.

There will always be some sort of conflict in America, whether it's with other countries or in our own bounderies. That is why I don't understand why there can't be a common way to resovle the conflicts that occur so they don't lead to bombings and such. No one can change the past or tell the future so why not reason with today and plan for tomorrow. To me you can't really blame Americans for not knowing what is going on because it is depressing to turn on the T.V. or look at the front page of the newspaper, everything is bad news.

America will never be a perfect country to live in. It is possible for Americans to realize what is going on in the world surrounding us. There is no way to possibly truthfully answer the question what would happened if we never invaded Iraq. There are so many things that could have happend if we didnt maybe iraq would have planned more attacks of terriosm or possibly they would have invaded America. No one knows what would have happened, but it is very much possible for us to start coming to the realization of possible conflicts is different countries. I really dont believe every country is against us, but that is something thatcould be taken into consideration.

I strongly agree with Teamkaos; it is simply not true that most Americans do not realize what is going on in the world. We are very high up there on the education charts and any formal accredited education has to have history, at the very least. Political science and other courses that teach about the world around us are taught at most of the schools in the country. Many people did not pay attention to these classes, but as adults they see the value and remember what they were taught. I have yet to speak with someone who did not have a single idea of what is going on around us, not only that but; these people have a strong opinon about it as well.
