advertising and myths

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZeQUxSjHwU
The link above is a Clorox bleach commercial that enforces a few of the cultural ideas and myths that we have been talking about in class. These ideas include gender, family, and education. The commercial shows the woman in one family, learning how to do the laundry from one generation to another. This commercial re-enforces that the idea that women are the one that should be doing the cleaning, cooking, etc. What do you think about the commercial and how it applies to the cultural ideas and myths that we have today. Or what are your views on any type of culture myth?

The ad was completely stereotypical, i believe somehwere in the ad the background voice said "occasionaly a man would wash clothes" witch basically went along with the cultural myths we live through. It still reinforced the belief that only women wash clothes while men are off at work bringing home the bacon. It's kind of hard to get past these cultural myths when they are portrayed daily in the media, so they're probably going to stick around a bit longer.

The ad shown is a strong example of the myths we are taught as Americans. Luckily media these days are opting to obtain a variety of ethnicity and race in advertisments. The advertising company knows who to direct their advertisment too, therefore in order for their product to be a success it is important for them to engage in all aspects of their buyers. The example given shows the example of woman who are the main gender doing the laundry, but on occasion the male gender particpates also.

I think that the gender example in this ad is quite correct. Gender myths today are quite frowned upon however the commercial shows the grandmothers of today's generation. These grandmothers were not the braw burning 70's girl, they were the yesteryear women who more likely than not were stay at home moms. The family myths about modern women are quite different and would disagree.

Even though the commercial shows a different era, i believe that the role of women in the household is constantly adapting. While it may have been acceptable in the 70's to have a woman stay in the home, i believe it is more acceptable now to expect the opposite. With the poverty level rising, the second income is usually necessary to maintain a good standard of living. Most households cant afford a stay at home parent these days.
